Review: Taste of Punjab, Bandra

Bandra is always starving for new restaurants even though we have so many options. But North Indian cuisine is always a hit here as whereever we go, we enjoy our butter chicken and naan!

When we heard of Taste of Punjab, we couldn’t wait to try it. The concept seemed interesting, a buffet, with Punjab inspired interiors. We went here on a Saturday night, not knowing if we’ll get a table. Luckily, we did even though the place was packed.

The ambience was loud! The music was loud! The colours were loud! But we are not complaining, we loved it! There was a bhangra troupe performing in the dining area, there were huge glass mirrored walls, jhumka chandeliers and glass pillars. There were live counters for chaat, parathas and a buffet spread for the maincourse and desserts.

The starters were served to our table alongwith our drinks. The chicken tikka and the fish tikka were delicious, succulent and well cooked. Chaas was served in a huge steel glass, just like it would be on the streets of Amritsar. The veg hara bhara kebab was good too. From the live paratha counter, the gobi paratha and aloo paratha were served hot with a huge chunk of butter on it. The chaat counter had paani puri and dahi chaat, which were great too! In the maincourse, the biryani was delicious as was the bhuna ghosht. In the desserts, there was kulfi, gulab jamun and rabdi. Not too bad, but we would’ve liked some more options there.
Overall, the food was great, no complaints and the music was great, the best of punjabi songs were being played making it hard for people to not dance.

The only place where they were lacking was the service. We had to call someone multiple times to serve us the starters or even just for water. I’m sure if they work on this, they have a bright future as I am definitely going back here!

Review: Amritsari Tadka

When we heard of Amritsari Tadka’s launch in the neighbourhood, we expected a hard core North Indian Dhaba like experience. Did the place meet our expectations? Read on to know…When we entered Amritsari Tadka, which has been started by the same group as Only Parathas, we were a little upset about the ambience. An average looking restaurant with little or no sign of Amritsar.

Tikka Platter

The service was impressive though: Servers were prompt and well trained, the restaurant was clean and pretty crowded on a Friday afternoon.

We ordered what the server recommended, a platter of tikkas, a ‘Chinese’ prawn starter (yes, they serve Chinese as well) and a Lemongrass mocktail to begin with. Amongst the starters, our favourite was the Ajwaini Fish Tikka – perfectly cooked and full of flavour.

Amritsari Naan and Prawns with Raita

In the mains, we had the Prawn gravy alongwith the signature Amritsari Naan. The mains didn’t impress us much. A little more spices could have helped!

Sizzling Brownie

For the desserts, we had the jalebi with rabdi and the sizzling brownie. The jalebi was not hot enough although it was juicy and crispy! The sizzling brownie was… umm… we have definitely had better.

Overall, Amritsari Tadka is a great option for the kitty party ladies or for a family dinner. Skip it if you’re planning a date or looking to have a traditional Punjabi meal!

Review: G Cafe at Vinegar

When we heard of the new boutique cafe that has opened at Vinegar – the store that has been making the rounds in the news in recent times, we were looking forward to give it a try. So we put on our tasting hats and drove off to check out this cozy little coffee shop called G Cafe, snuggled inside the fashion store.

The menu is limited but looks very interesting and innovative. Options include salads, sandwiches, tarts, smoothies and other beverages. Before we started our meal we were told that the portions that that will be served are only tasting portions and will be soon converted into generous servings once the cafe is fully functional.
To begin with, we ordered the Hazelnut, Almond & Chocolate Smoothie which was quite decent, but then again, you can’t really go wrong with chocolate, can you? And the Berry Smoothie (Raspberry + Blueberry + Strawberry) which lacked flavour and could have been a tad bit sweeter. That’s where our disappointment ended.

Coming to the food, we first ordered the Mixed Greens, Roasted Almonds & Cranberry Salad. It was nutty, delightful and as amazing as the ingredients made it sound. Since we couldn’t decide which open sandwich amongst the two choices sounded better, we called for both. The Caramalized Pears & Candid Walnut sandwich and the Roasted & Marinated Pumpkin with Mozzarella sandwich, both were full of flavour and comprised of interesting combinations of fruit and cheese.
When we thought our amazement ends there, we were served the desserts! The Banoffee Pie was below average but the Tiramisu made up for it. Served in a flower pot with cookie crumbles on top and a strong punch of rum, this one was surely a winner!

Overall, G – Cafe is for all you Masterchef fans, they have blended some great ingredients and put together a wonderful menu. We are definitely going back here, especially for that Tiramisu!
