Review: Ithaka

IMG_1009

With Masterchef India’s new season being all Vegetarian and so many new places in the city taking the no-meat route, we are really wondering if being Vegetarian is the new trend that Mumbai is going to switch to.

While we love our meats and sea food, once in a while, a good vegetarian meal is something we wouldn’t say no to.

Ithaka, Mumbai’s new Lebanese restaurant, is opening soon in Lower Parel. We were invited by FBAI for a preview tasting and here’s what we thought about the place.

Located right above Riso, Ithaka has the most adorable look from the outside. A little colorful house from the outside, brightly lit on the inside, the restaurant claims to be the India’s first Lebanese restaurant with an authentic all-vegetarian fare.

To begin with, we were served the soups, the Mushroom Cappuccino Soup and the Lemongrass Soup. Both soups were delicious, although a little less salt would be preferred. Next up were the salads, the Water Chestnut and Raw Mango Salad, not too sure how it falls under Lebanese, we thought it was more Asian, tasty nonetheless. The Mediterranean Mint Salad – a blend of mint curd, fresh beans, spring onions and cucumber, this one tasted more Mediterranean than any of the previous dishes.

cold mezzo - olive hummus, pesto hummus, hummus

The star of the meal was the Cold Mezzo, Pita Bread served with Hummus, Hummus Turki – traditional hummus topped with spicy olives and Hummus Harra – traditional hummus topped with pesto and garlic. The Hummus Turki and Harra were absolutely delightful and just one platter was not enough.

The Batata Hara – grilled potatoes tossed in garlic and herbs was another dish we enjoyed. But then again, how can anyone go wrong with potatoes. An interesting option you must try is the Sesame Zucchini  -Zucchini coated with sesame and topped with veggies.

Dishes we thought you should give a miss were the mediocre peas in toast cups and the Hummus Harissa.

We didn’t really try the dessert, but a second trip is going to happen soon once the place opens on the 17th February 2015.

Overall, we don’t think they should use the word authentic to describe their fare, as most of what we tried was definitely not authentic. Some hits and some misses but definitely worth a visit.

California Pizza Kitchen Gets a New Menu

We were recently invited to try the new menu at California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). Here’s a sneak peak into the recent additions.

Our favourites were the Black Bean Quesadillas and the Chicken Caesar Sandwich in Cheese bread. The Waldorf Salad, although colourful, missed the crunch! The Lettuce Wrap was tangy and delicious and would’ve tasted better if it was slightly warmer. Surprisingly, we were disappointed with the pizzas and would suggest our readers to stick to the classics and not experiment with the new additions.

We loved the fact that all the dishes were served with sides, either salad, fries or dips. Overall, we appreciate CPK’s attempt to try out something new, we love their inhouse baked breads (that are also for sale) and the fresh ingredients used in all the dishes!

Review: Haagen Dazs

When we hear that there’s a new dessert shop that has opened in the city, we leave everything that we’re doing to go try it out. Haagen Dazs opened its second outlet in High Street Phoenix, following the one at Oberoi Mall, Goregaon.

Priced at the higher end, Haagen Dazs is definitely expensive for a scoop of ice cream on a regular day. But when it’s celebration time or if someone else is paying, it’s the best bet. This outlet is located right next to PVR and has an indoor as well as outdoor seating. We opted for the fondue instead of the regular ice-creams and we don’t regret our choice.

The fondue was served along with a platter of chocolate brownies, sponge cake, chocolate biscuit, a platter of fruits which included apples, oranges and bananas and sixteen mini scoops of ice cream, yes sixteen! As expected, the fondue was delicious and the dish was swiped clean in a matter of minutes.

Will we come back here? Yes, definitely. Especially on our promotion days!

Review: Dolce Vita

We recently dropped in at Dolce Vita, The World Food Store, located at High Street Phoenix.
The restaurant is divided into various sections, with the food store, cafe bar, meat shop and wine cellar. The food store section is stocked with a range of gourmet foods on offer, international flavoured teas, cream cheese, frozen foods, ready to make bakes, candies and lots more. There is a display of cheese,  desserts and wines in the cafe bar.
We soon got a table for ourselves and browsed through the menu. The menu offers global cuisine, with something from every part of the world. They also have a couple of promotional offers; the Classic Afternoon Tea offer was what we decided to try.
An offer for two people, it comprised of unlimited tea or coffee, an assortment of sandwiches, desserts and scones with clotted cream and homemade jam. The Coronation Chicken sandwich was delicious and among the desserts, the mocha cheesecake was to die for! The homemade cherry jam had a hint of rum in it and went perfectly well with the scones. This offer was undoubtedly a steal for the price and we totally recommend it.
Will we come back here? Most definitely, to try out the other offers and a la carte offerings!
