Review: Grandmama’s Cafe

Nostalgia will transport you back to your childhood, to your frequent visits to your Grandmama’s house, for the food, for the vibe and for the comfort. Grandmama’s Cafe impresses, the moment you walk in, with their embroidered photo frames, white walls, white couches and floral bill boxes. Expect a waiting time of one hour atleast, as getting a table here, is as time consuming as getting money out of the ATM (current scenario). Although, the experience is worth the wait.

We dropped by to try out their specially crafted Diabetic Friendly menu for the Diabetic Food Trail. It comprised of items from their regular menu, some as they were, some with some minor tweaks. The Diabetic Food Trail® is a pioneering initiative which offers a wonderful culinary experience to Diabetics, Pre-Diabetics and Health conscious individuals at over 200 restaurants across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore & Pune. The Diabetic Food Trail is presented by Britannia NutriChoice Essentials in association with Biocon. Read more about this initiative here:  The Diabetic Food Trail

A set menu, we started our meal with the salads. The Caesar Salad, the only change being, no croutons, was fresh and light. With or without croutons, we are definitely having this again. Although if you’re looking for something to pack a power punch, try the Nutrition Power House Salad – Quinoa, barley, pomegranate, goat cheese, rocket leaves tossed in a lemon dressing. So yum yet so healthy.

Moving on, the small plates from their all day menu, were extremely impressive. We tried the Mushroom A La Plancha – mushrooms tossed on a griddle with garlic, olive oil and sweet balsamic. Addictive, delicious and worth a try. The Gambas Al Ajillo – prawns with garlic, olive oil, chilli and basil, were tasty too, not the best we’ve had though. Not to miss the Kejriwal Grandmamas Style – bread topped with egg, mushroom and green chilli cheese sauce, we wish we woke up to this for breakfast every day!

The Pan Seared John Dory and the Home Style Grilled Chicken were next on our tasting platter. Both cooked to perfection and delicious. By the end of our meal, we were quite full, though we saved some space for dessert and thank god for that.

The Gobstopper
The Gobstopper

From their regular menu and not a part of the Diabetic Food Trail, we ordered for the Gobstopper – flourless chocolate layered with mousse and stuffed with marshmallows. Yes you read that right! We could easily conclude that this is one of the best, most decadent desserts in the city.

At the end of our meal all we said was, we can’t wait to try the rest of our menu, so we’re definitely going back there.

P.S.: If you’re starving and want to grab a quick bite, then maybe you should leave this place for another day. But if you are looking to indulge, Grandmama is calling out to you today.

Product Review: Maybelline New York the Colossal Liner – Black

Maybelline has some of the finest cosmetics and their kajal and liner are the best you can get in the market at affordable rates.

The Maybelline New York Colossal Liner comes in a pen like sleek packaging and is quite sturdy to carry around without worrying about the cap opening while you keep it in your bag.

On applying, you will realize that the flexi tip makes it easy to apply, whether you want a thin line or a winged eye look. One of the best jet black liners in the market, this one easily stays for 8-10 hours without fading or getting smudged. But the best part about this product is that it dries really quick, so for all you ladies who are impatient and can’t keep your eyes shut for too long after applying your liner, this one is for  you.

Mini Review: Guilt Trip

For those who don’t know, Guilt Trip has been started by one of the ex partners of LSD – Love Sugar Dough, hence our expectations were high. Located right next to Baskin Robbins at Carter Road, Guilt Trip is primarily a cupcake shop but also stocks brownies, macaroons and few other desserts.

We tried the Chocolate Truffle Cupcake and it was quite a disappointment. Sugary, dry and not gooey at all. Priced at Rs.70 we expected much more from it. Let’s hope we have a good enough reason to go back there!

Venue: Guilt Trip
Address: Off Carter Road, Bandra West
Landmark: Next to Baskin Robbins

Review: Haagen Dazs

When we hear that there’s a new dessert shop that has opened in the city, we leave everything that we’re doing to go try it out. Haagen Dazs opened its second outlet in High Street Phoenix, following the one at Oberoi Mall, Goregaon.

Priced at the higher end, Haagen Dazs is definitely expensive for a scoop of ice cream on a regular day. But when it’s celebration time or if someone else is paying, it’s the best bet. This outlet is located right next to PVR and has an indoor as well as outdoor seating. We opted for the fondue instead of the regular ice-creams and we don’t regret our choice.

The fondue was served along with a platter of chocolate brownies, sponge cake, chocolate biscuit, a platter of fruits which included apples, oranges and bananas and sixteen mini scoops of ice cream, yes sixteen! As expected, the fondue was delicious and the dish was swiped clean in a matter of minutes.

Will we come back here? Yes, definitely. Especially on our promotion days!

Review: LSD – Love, Sugar, Dough

We were passing the little lane to get to Carter Road when we stumbled upon a tiny colourful eatery which was screaming out to us. LSD – Love, Sugar, Dough is a brand new dessert shop and bakery that sells irresistible desserts and scrumptious baked goods.
Extremely colourful and vibrant, these adjectives describe the interiors of the place and also the display of cupcakes which interestingly has small and large cupcakes with different shades of frosting. Run by Sheeba Hasan – a major in marketing and Tarannum Aziz – a baker since twelve years, this place looks like it has been designed with a lot of love.
Their menu comprises of croissants, sandwiches, breads, toasties, biryanis, beverages, pastries, cheesecakes and cupcakes. Okay, stop drooling! They also customise cupcakes and are soon going to start with cakes.
The highlights of their menu are the ‘Ferrero Rocher Croissant’ and the ‘Sip – a – brownie’ shake! Their cupcakes are also quite delicious and they are definitely giving some tough competition to their very popular neighbour.

Review: Fro Yo

With Frozen Yogurts gaining popularity in the suburbs, there’s one more on the block. Fro Yo opened its first outlet in Bandra and is soon opening another one in Oshiwara, opposite Sammy Sosa. This outlet is Fro Yo is ideal for takeaways as it is relatively small and has limited seating available.

You can choose from flavours such as Blueberry, Strawberry and Plain Fro Yo alongwith a wide range of toppings like Chocolate Chips, Lychee, Strawberry, Cashews, Almonds, Oreo Cookies, Kiwi, Mango, Coconut Flakes, Hazelnut Crunch and lots more. We tried the Blueberry Yogurt with Chocolate Chips, Oreo Cookies and Kiwi toppings.  The toppings made the dessert a little crunchy and the yogurt was perfectly sour and yummy!

What we enjoyed the most was the smoothie at Fro Yo. We tried the Frojito, a unique blend of mint, lime and sprite topped with Strawberry yogurt, absolutely delightful! We loved Fro Yo and would recommend it to everyone who would rather choose a healthy alternative to indulge in after their meal!

Review: Yogurtbay

After Cocoberry and Fro Yo, Bandra gets a brand new Frozen Yogurt Place called Yogurtbay. Located in the Khau Galli of Carter Road, the new kid on the block, promoted its launch by giving out free cups of yogurt with lots of toppings on the first day. Impressive, huh?

We reached Yogurt Bay after the much created hype and tried the Blueberry Cheesecake Yogurt, the Strawberry Yogurt and the Chocolate Yogurt. The Blueberry Yogurt was sinful, Strawberry was not bad either, but the Chocolate Yogurt tasted like a sorbet (we wouldn’t recommend it). For the toppings, you can choose from the Oreo cookies, Brownies, Marshmallows, Strawberries, Choco chips and lots more. What you must try are the ‘Poppers’, they are small jelly pieces that burst in your mouth, distinctive and exciting!

They have played smart when it comes to the seating. Cushions are placed on the platform outside the parlour giving it a young and refreshing look. Great effort we must say, Yogurtbay is definitely here to stay!
